|
| 1. | Make an inventory of your stored items and keep it in a safe place at home or in a safe deposit box. |
| 2. | Plan your storage space. Place those items that you need to get to often in the moving vehicle first (so they’ll be put in the front of the storage space). Allow space for walkways between stored items. |
| 3. | List the contents of each box on all four sides. Number and seal boxes. |
| 4. | Dishes and glasses should be wrapped in packing paper and placed in dish pack boxes. Stack these on top. |
| 5. | Use uniform size boxes for easy stacking. Be sure they’re strong enough to hold 25-30 pounds. Avoid putting too much in each box. Stack lighter boxes on top of heavier boxes. |
| 6. | Pictures and mirrors should be wrapped in mirror crates marked FRAGILE and stacked on end. |
| 7. | Furniture with drawers can be used as storage places for knick knacks, china, silverware, and small items. Wrap in tablecloths, towels, or blankets to prevent breakage. |
| 8. | Larger appliances make excellent packing cases for blankets, towels, tablecloths and clothes. |
| 9. | Shovels, hoes, rakes and hoses can be stored together in empty trash cans. Stack extra cans inside one another. |
| 10. | Tables with removable legs should be taken apart to save space. |
| 11. | Sofas and loveseats can be stored on end to save floor space. Always place a protective waterproof cover under the end on the floor. Cushions should be wrapped in plastic and placed on top. |
| 12. | If you stand mattresses on end, be sure to prop them up so they stand straight. Otherwise, they may get bent out of shape and become lumpy. |
| 13. | Pack books flat to protect their spines. Use packing materials to fill in empty spaces in boxes. Do not pack fragile items in the same box with books and do not overload. |
| 14. | Place your storage items on 2 x 4 boards or Visqueen to guard against dampness. Concrete floors may become cold and damp. |
| Prohibited Storage Goods: Common sense and state laws determine what may be stored. You alone control access to your storage space; therefore, never store live animals, perishables, flammable liquids and fuels, toxic materials, or other items that need a controlled environment. Drain the fuel from gasoline engines before storage. | |
